Shirley Ball

August 12, 1927 — December 15, 2020

Shirley J. Ball, 93 years old from Eliza, IL died peacefully Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at Amber Ridge Assisted Living surrounded by her family where she had lived for the past 5 years. Graveside services are 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 26, 2020 in the Eliza Creek Cemetery.  There is no visitation.  Memorials may be made to the Eliza Community Church, Eliza Community Center or Eliza Creek Cemetery.  Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo is in charge of arrangements and online condolences may be left at www.fippingerfuneralhome.com.

Shirley was born on her family farm August 12, 1927 to Dan and Mollie (Noble) Anderson. She married Merle “Hooly” Ball from New London, Iowa on her family farm on August 15, 1948. Hooly died in 1995.

Shirley graduated from Joy High School and went to Burlington Cosmetology School. She was a substitute teacher for many years while her children were young. In 1967, she graduated from Marycrest College with her degree in Education. She was the 5th -6th grade teacher at Eliza and later at New Boston in the Westmer School District. She retired in 1992.

Shirley loved to garden, mow and take care of her yard. She and her husband loved the mountains and took trips to Glacier and the Rockies. Later she became travel companions to Gayle and Jerry – traveling to the Oregon coast and Colorado to visit her grandson, Jason. She traveled with Joy and Caesar to Georgia and Texas to visit her granddaughter, Chrissie.

At home, she loved to be with family- all her grandchildren and great grandchildren that lived in the area… family was everything to her.  Shirley loved being with friends. There was never a stranger to her.

Shirley was a member of the Eliza Community Church, Eliza Ladies Aid, Eliza Lions Club, IL NEA of Retired Teachers, Mercer County Historical Society, National Society Daughters of American Revolution, Buffalo Prairie Eastern Star. She helped in many community fundraisers by making her most requested Pecan Pie.

Survivors include two daughters, Gayle (Jerry) McNall of Sherrard, IL; Joy (Caesar) Simpao of Rock Island; one son, Scott (Bonnie) Ball of Eliza; grandchildren, Jason (Daphnah) McNall of Medford, Oregon; Jared (Brandy) McNall of Moline, IL; Joe (Emily)Simpao of Rock Island, IL; Chrissie (Andy) Althoff of Rock Hill, South Carolina; Marc (Allison) Simpao of Davenport, Iowa; Dan Ball – Eliza, IL; Katie (Dave) Bowen of Orion, IL; great grandchildren, Hannah and Kinlee McNall; Tucker, Joel, Eli Althoff; Isabella and Sophia Simpao.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband; infant grandson, Aaron Ball, siblings and spouses, Maxine and Everett Welch, Velma and Lytle Lambert and Martin and Marie Anderson.

The family thanks the entire staff at Amber Ridge Assisted Living for their wonderful care given to Mom the past 5 years and especially during the Covid pandemic this year.
