James Bergstrom

March 28, 1937 — March 31, 2020

James E. Bergstrom, 83, of Davenport, Iowa, formerly of Woodhull, IL, died Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at home.  Cremation has been accorded.  Private graveside services will be Friday, April 3, 2020 at the Woodhull Cemetery.  Memorial services will be at a later date at Bethany Lutheran Church in Woodhull.  Memorials may be left to Bethany Lutheran Church or Ridgecrest Charitable Fund.  Peterson Wallin Knox Funeral Home in Woodhull is in charge of arrangements and online condolences can be made at www.petersonwallinknox.com.

Jim was born March 28, 1937, in Galesburg, IL, son of Ellsworth and Frances (Johnson) Bergstrom.  He graduated from AlWood High School, Woodhull, IL, in 1955.  On August 17, 1957, he married Lucille H. Lundblad at Bethany Lutheran, officiated by Lucille’s father, Rev. Harry Lundblad.

Jim served 9 years in the Illinois National Guard.  He was a third generation farmer on the Bergstrom family farm north of Woodhull.  Raising cattle was his pride and joy.  Jim retired from active farming in 2006.

He was an active lifetime member of Bethany.  He served on the AlWood School Board, the Clover Township Library Board, was a member of the Hawkeye Fly Fishing Association in Davenport, and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.  In his retirement years, one could find Jim fly fishing or riding his bicycle, or riding his Honda scooter on country roads near the farm.  He will also be remembered for his fun-loving sense of humor which remained until the very end, and his long-term memory of family and Woodhull history.

Jim is survived by his wife: Lucille; daughter: Ann (Gay Wilker) Bergstrom of St. Paul, MN; son: Dave (Gina) Bergstrom of Vandalia, MI; grandchildren: Ellie Bergstrom of Australia and Ben Bergstrom of California; cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends from the past and present.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Frances Johnson Bergstrom and Ellsworth Bergstrom.

The family thanks UnityPoint/Trinity Hospice, CASI Jane’s Place, Good Samaritan Home Healthcare and the community of Ridgecrest for their unrelenting and creative care and support.
