Virgil Griswold

January 12, 1928 — August 8, 2013

Virgil Duane Griswold, 85, of Aledo, died Thursday, August 8, 2013 at Trinity West in Rock Island, IL. Services are 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 15, 2013 at the Aledo First Baptist Church. Visitation is 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at Fippinger Funeral Home where memorials may be left to the Aledo First Baptist Church and online condolences may be made at www.fippingerfuneralhome.com. Burial is in Aledo Cemetery.

Virgil was born January 12, 1928 in Colchester, IL to Virgil and Aleta Switzer Griswold. He graduated from Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana in 1945. Virgil then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as a radio operator. After being honorably discharged, he married Martha Rhodes December 29, 1951 in Macomb, IL.

He worked at a steel mill in Gary, Indiana and then farmed in the Macomb and Aledo areas. Virgil was also a hog purchaser for IPLA and retired from Aledo FS in 1985.

He was an active member of the Aledo First Baptist Church, serving in many capacities. Virgil enjoyed golfing, walking, watching his granddaughter perform with the high school pom squad. attending his grandson's sports games. Mr. Griswold was also an active member of the Old Men's Golf League at Hawthorne Ridge Golf Course in rural Aledo for many years.

He is survived by his wife: Martha of Aledo; one son: Linus (Cathy) Griswold of Aledo; 2 grandchildren: Heather (Will) Cooper of East Peoria, IL; and Matt Griswold of Aledo, IL.

His parents and stepfather: Lester Ellis preceded him in death.
