Shirley was born on her family farm August 12, 1927 to Dan and Mollie (Noble) Anderson. She married Merle “Hooly” Ball from New London, Iowa on her family farm on August 15, 1948. Hooly died in 1995.

Shirley graduated from Joy High School and went to Burlington Cosmetology School. She was a substitute teacher for many years while her children were young. In 1967, she graduated from Marycrest College with her degree in Education. She was the 5th -6th grade teacher at Eliza and later at New Boston in the Westmer School District. She retired in 1992.

She traveled with Joy and Caesar to Georgia and Texas to visit her granddaughter, Chrissie.
