Joann B. Nelson, 89 of Ophiem, IL died Wednesday, December 7, 2022 at home. A Mass of Christian Burial is 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 10, 2022 at St. John's Catholic Church in Woodhull. Burial is in the Grace Lutheran Cemetery in Ophiem. Visitation is 12:30 p.m. until the time of Mass at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to St. John's Catholic Church, St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Solon, Iowa or Camp Courageous in Monticello, Iowa. She was born December 4, 1933 in Lisbon, Iowa to Preston and Anna Pavelka McCall. She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1951 and St. Anthony's School of Nursing in 1954. Joann married Richard F. Nelson September 10, 1955 in Lisbon, Iowa.
Joann was a Registered Nurse for Dr. Picard in Alpha and retired from Friendship Manor, Rock Island in 1995.
Her memberships included St. John's Catholic Church and its Altar Society in Woodhull and the Ophiem American Legion Auxiliary.
Joann loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed all kinds of music, especially Czech music. She was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
She is survived by her husband, Dick; two daughters, Deb (Chuck) McLaughlin of Alpha, IL; Diane (Mitch) Johnson of Pinetop, AZ; two sons, Dan (Jackie) Nelson of Oro Valley, AZ; Dave Nelson of Cambridge, IL; eight grandchildren, Kortney (Mike) Holbrook, Bryce Nelson, Kindel (Brad) Haverback, Annie (Chad) Wood, Wade (Breanna) McLaughlin, Ryan (Krissie) McLaughlin, Weston Petrovich, Tavia (Joe) Petrovich; 16 great grandchildren, Bennett, Annika and Julian Holbrook, Olivia, Kellen, Grant, Quinn Haverback, Preston, Jameson, Finley and McKinley Wood, Oliver, Madelyn and Mac McLaughlin, Kejay and Kylan Petrovich Wilson; one sister, Pat (Ed) Mesick of Bettendorf, IA; one brother, Dean (Nyla) McCall of Mt. Vernon, Iowa; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
