Howard J. Adams, 92, of Aledo, IL died Friday, August 31, 2012 at the VA Hospice Unit at Heartland Healthcare Center in Galesburg. Services are 11 AM Tuesday at Fippinger Funeral Home. Burial is in the Oakdale Cemetery, Wilton, Iowa where Military Services will be conducted. Visitation is from 9 AM until time of service. He was born June 5, 1920 in Chicago, IL to Richard and Amanda Adams. He attended Tiskilwa Schools. He married Norma E. Kretschmar August 5, 1942 in Wayland, Missouri.
Howard was a Master Sergeant in the 8th Air Force, 384th Bomb Group. He was First Engineer and top turret gunner on a B17 Bomber. He was shot down on a mission to Germany over Holland and was taken Prisoner of War at Stalag XVII B for 22 months. He was the only surviving member of the original crew of 10. After the war, he owned and operated Adams Plumbing & Heating in Aledo as a master plumber, retiring in 1978.
He was a lifetime member and past commander of the Mercer County VFW Post 1571, the American Legion Fallerans Post 121, the DVA Veterans and the Ex Prisoners of War. He was a 50 year member and past president of the Aledo Kiwanis Club and former member of the Aledo Jaycees.
He was a former scout master having received the Silver Beaver Award for his volunteerism, a lifetime member of the Wilton, Iowa Historical Society and a 65 year member of Aledo United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years: Norma; three sons: Howard R. (Margaret) Adams of Springfield, Ohio; Harold James (Agnes) Adams of Aledo, IL; and Paul Fredric Adams of Kansas City, Missouri; 3 grandchildren: Robert E. (Amy) Adams of Burlington, IA; Cathy J. Cashman of Dubuque, IA; Howard Walker Adams of Kansas City, Missouri; 5 great grandchildren: Mary, Kyle, Cody, Samantha and Christian; three great great grandchildren: Easton, Erica and Logan.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents.
